Join trade organizations:

I think this is a risly idea, maybe I left it for the last one becouse it has many risks, now if you link to someone who is penalized you ca be penalized too (see the directory-wiki with no pagerank!)

List your site in deirectories

That's a a good one, not for google, but it seems to improve rankings in MSN very quicky. But it's difficult to find a lot of directories and it's a slow and tedious work to do.

Press releases

Create a quality topical directory one level above your category

Write compelling articles and get them sindicated
